As we countdown to Christmas, we’d like to spread a little Christmas cheer by sharing three uplifting Adoption Stories from PetSmart Charities. Meet Minnie, Winston and Burt…
While every adopted pet has a life story prior to finding their forever home, Minnie’s is especially heart wrenching. A PetSmart Charities adoption partner received a call one night regarding an animal abuse case. Minnie, who had been set on fire, was quickly brought in with severe burns to be treated. After three months of recovery, Minnie was ready for adoption and had already caught the eye of Kristin Taylor. Kristin followed Minnie’s story on social media and the local news, and even donated money to help relieve Minnie’s recovery costs. Kristin used to teach fire safety education, and knew that she and her husband, a firefighter, would be the perfect family to take in the newly transformed cat. Minnie now lives happily with another cat, two Dalmatians and her pet parents.
When Winston and Valerie Mau met each other at a PetSmart Charities Everyday Adoption Center, the two impacted each other’s lives more than they could have imagined. After being rescued from the streets and bouncing around from owner to owner, Winston finally found his stable, forever home when Valerie made the decision to adopt him. However, adopting Winston came with conditions. Because Valerie’s mom was allergic to cats, she knew that Winston’s home couldn’t be in her parents’ house.
“Right then and there I made the decision to move out of my parents’ house and get my own apartment,” she said. “That way I could adopt Winston.”
It was a true coming-of-age moment for Valerie, and she credits Winston for giving her the extra push she needed toward that independent step.
When Burt was surrendered by an adoptive family for the third time, once again for reasons out of his control, the outlook for the friendly feline started looking bleak. At nine-years-old, staff at his humane society knew that people often shy away from older pets that have had multiple homes. However, when Koty Slough walked through the door, Burt’s luck changed for the better. Although Koty originally came in looking for a dog to adopt, he decided to take his girlfriend’s advice and look at the available cats, too. Once Burt caught his eye, Koty knew he was the one. The two instantly clicked, and Koty wasn’t at all bothered by Burt’s age or that he had been returned to the shelter several times. Burt left with his new pet parent that day, and, after taking time to adjust to his new home, became Koty’s constant companion.
“Burt is the sweetest and most affectionate animal I have ever met,” he said. “He is amazing and I can promise this is his home from now on.”
