One thing that sets us humans apart from many other species is opposable thumbs, which allow us to do things that other creatures can’t do. Today, Tuesday 3rd March is “What if Cats and Dogs had Opposable Thumbs Day”, so we asked the Pawesome Cats family what they would do if they had opposable thumbs. Here’s what they had to say:
“I’d let myself into the kitchen at 4.30am, and get my own food out the fridge – actually, I might not even wait till morning… I could start midnight snacking… in secret, when everyone else is asleep. So, where do I get these opposable thumbs?”
“I love you mama, and you look after me so well. If I had opposable thumbs I would look after you too. I would put the kettle on, and make you a nice cup of tea – I’d bring it to you on a tray with some biscuits – those little chicken ones you give me are really yummy, and I’d be happy to share.”
“Remember that toy we saw on the big screen, the one with the stick and feathers that looked like lots of fun? I really, really want it, and my birthday is ages away. If I had opposable thumbs, I’d get on the computer and order it online… with just a few mice clicks it’d be mine. Here mousie, mousie…”
“If I had opposable thumbs I could turn pages and read my own books, rather than helping you read yours. I’ve already chewed the corners to bookmark my favourites on the bookshelf. And I’ve always been curious… what would happen if I flushed the toilet when you’re in the shower? Or if I turned the key in the lock on that big door down the hallway when you’re outside?”
What would your cats do if they had opposable thumbs? Would they be focused on an ‘all-you-can-eat buffet’, sharing the love, the latest toys for playtime, or mischief making?
