Today we’re reviewing our first book on the Pawesome Cats blog. Sammy Sparrow’s First Flight is the third children’s book from author Tracy Ahrens, which she has dedicated to “all the creatures I have rescued or tried to rescue since childhood.”
Tracy created the book images and text over 20 years ago (during a two week period) when she was in college, and only now has she decided to bring the book to life. Sammy Sparrow’s First Flight is inspired by Tracy’s childhood years rescuing baby sparrows that accidentally fell from a multi-room birdhouse in her neighbour’s yard.
About the Book
In Sammy Sparrow’s First Flight (for readers aged 2-8), a young sparrow named Sammy quickly learns why parents set rules after trying to fly alone at night. Sammy is only a young bird, so his wings are weak and when he tries to fly by himself he falls into the bush below. The world is scary viewed from the ground, and the yellow cat named Chester is much bigger than he appears from Sammy’s home in the sky. Luckily, a friendly owl appears, scoops Sammy in his wings and flies him back home to the safety of the birdhouse and comfort of his parents’ wings.
This is a sweet story about a curious and fearless young bird who wants his independence and is trying to grow up too fast. We love the cute and colourful illustrations and especially like that Tracy is helping raise money for local rescue organisations.
