Are you using Instagram to share photos of your cat or dog? For us, Instagram is a great way to capture our day-to-day life and the special moments we share within the Pawesome Cats family.
We enjoy taking photos, and using Instagram is pretty easy. It’s accessible on Apple and Android phones, which makes it super easy to point, shoot and upload a photo within minutes, unlike other forms of social media such as Twitter where you have to cleverly convey your message within a 140 character limit.
Whether you’re a doting pet parent who wants to share photos of your cat or dog, or a pet blogger looking to increase traffic to your blog, Instagram has something for everyone.
How to get the most out of Instagram
1. Post photos regularly
Build momentum by sharing your photos regularly. This will help you to help build a fan base of people who want to know more about your cat/s. We post on Instagram 5-7 times a week.
2. Take high quality photos
Vary your backgrounds, make sure there’s sufficient lighting, and be creative with the composition of your shot. We know this is hard with feline models! Use photo-editing software (or Instagram’s filters) to bring out the best in your photos, but be careful not to overdo it.
3. Build a community
Take the time to engage with people who are sharing photos that you enjoy looking at – like, comment and follow anyone you are interested in.
4. Create a killer profile page
Your profile page is the first page people see when they check out your Instagram feed, so give them a reason to start following you by including information about you and your cat/s. Don’t forget to include links to your other social media profiles, blog or website.
5. Know the best time to post your photos
Timing is everything. Ideally, you want to post photos to Instagram when your followers are online and engaged, so they’ll be more likely to like and comment.
6. Use hashtags effectively
Hashtags should relate to what you’re posting (e.g. #cat #kitten #cute) but don’t go overboard otherwise it looks spammy. We use a maximum of 3-5 hashtags in each photo.
7. Utilise your social media community
Maximise the reach of your photos by cross posting them to other social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter. Instagram makes it very easy to link and post to your other social media accounts.
8. Check out other pet accounts
What are other pet accounts on Instagram doing? How do they engage with their community? You can learn an awful lot by observing others who are successful on Instagram.
