The Pawesome Cats family eat a raw food diet, so I was interested to read Kimberly Gauthier’s e-book Raw Feeding from A-Z: Because We Want Our Dogs to Live Forever, and see just how raw feeding cats differs from raw feeding dogs.
Here’s what I learnt. Regardless of species (cat or dog), a raw food diet CAN resolve a variety of health issues. Kimberly embarked on a raw feeding program to treat a variety of issues in her four dogs including ear infections, skin allergies, digestive issues including loose stools, itchy paws, and arthritis / joint pain. We started feeding raw to treat Charlie’s IBD symptoms – loose stools and diarrhoea. I couldn’t help but smile, when she spoke of doing the happy dance when Rodrigo had a solid poop. I’ve done that happy dance too!
The principles of raw feeding are the same for cats and dogs. It’s important to feed a species appropriate diet, rotating proteins is vital to provide balanced nutrition and reduce the risk of allergies and intolerances, and supplements are essential. As Kimberly points out, one of the reasons that so many vets are anti-raw is because the only time they see a raw fed dog is when the dog is unwell, and this is usually because the owner hasn’t understood the importance of feeding a balanced raw diet.
Cat and dog parents also have the same concerns about feeding a raw food diet – they think it’s too difficult or time-consuming to prepare, they worry about cost and they have fears about bacterial contamination. Kimberly addresses these issues with sensible and well-researched advice.
For dog owners, this e-book has a ton of practical advice including the use of prebiotics, probiotics and digestive enzymes for dogs; how to tempt picky eaters (they’re not so different from fussy feline eaters after all!), smart options for saving money when feeding raw, and lists of recommended suppliers based on what Kimberly feeds her own pack.
Kimberly has an honest, up-front and very approachable style, which makes Raw Feeding from A-Z an easy and inspiring read! After you’ve read this book you’ll want to do your own research and learn all that you can about nutrition and raw feeding to give your pet the best chance at a long, healthy and happy life.
In Kimberly’s words: “Feeding raw doesn’t have to be complicated. It feels like it is… but once you actually start doing it, it gets easier and easier. Today, I can’t imagine that I questioned making the switch over.”
Questions with Kimberly
What’s the single most important piece of advice you’d give to pet owners starting the raw food journey?
Do your homework first. Many times I see people get excited about feeding raw, because they hear so many success stories, but they don’t realize that it takes time to learn how to feed a balanced diet. Unless a pet lover has someone to help you along the way, I’d advise pet lovers to start with premade and slowly work your way into making your own raw.
Do you have any tips to make the transition to a raw food diet easier?
I highly recommend Darwin’s Natural Pet Products or Raw Paws Pet. Darwin’s offers premade raw, and Raw Paws Pet provides the ingredients pet lovers need to create a balanced diet. Both companies are reputable and will help pet owners get started with a raw diet.
What’s next for you as an author?
My next book will be a quick start guide for dog lovers. There are several available on Amazon, but I’ll be approaching the guide from a different direction, making it easier for aspiring raw feeders to follow.
